Chinese and Russian Presidents oversee signing of USD3 billion of nuclear deals

Chinese and Russian companies signed a number of deals, including for nuclear cooperation projects totaling CNY20 billion (USD3.13 billion) and a USD1 billion industrial investment fund as Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Beijing. The nuclear contracts cover three projects, including the Tianwan plant in Jiangsu and the Xudabao facility in Liaoning. China is partnering with Rosatom in order to obtain advanced nuclear technologies for its atomic power industry, and diversify its nuclear power contracts beyond Western suppliers Westinghouse and Areva.
Chinese President Xi Jinping lauded the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries and said of President Putin: “He is my best, most intimate friend.”
President Xi Jinping also conferred the Friendship Medal, the highest honor of China to foreigners, on Russian President Vladimir Putin for his long-standing, prominent work in strengthening friendship and partnership between China and Russia, the China Daily reported. A grand ceremony was held to award the medal at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. This is the first time the Friendship Medal has been awarded since China established its honor system in July last year.
The Sino-Russian Summit was held ahead of an meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on June 9 and 10 in Qingdao, Shandong province. Presidents Xi and Putin traveled together to the city by high-speed train.
