China is preparing the next phase of the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region, as the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has issued a master plan for an eco-friendly, integrated development of the area. The new plan aims to create a strong and active economic growth nucleus and a gateway for further opening up the economy. It is expected to create a world-class city cluster to fuel the growth of the entire nation. Under the new plan, Shanghai can better play up its functions in international economy, finance, trade, shipping and scientific innovation, as well as forge a powerful brand in services, manufacturing, shopping and culture. As the delta region develops, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces are set to become an internationally competitive, advanced manufacturing base, a leading player in the digital economy, and an important source of innovation and emerging industries, according to the plan.
A 2,300-square-kilometer demonstration zone – Shanghai’s Qingpu district; Suzhou’s Wujiang district in Jiangsu province; and Jiaxing’s Jiashan county in Zhejiang province – is located in the middle of the delta. Over 95% of the zone’s main water bodies should by 2025 reach the National IV standard water quality level, and the Taipu river should maintain the National III standard, making it fit for aquaculture or consumption. The green coverage should reach 42%. Shanghai metro line 17 will extend to connect with Suzhou metro line 10. The high-speed railway lines Shanghai-Suzhou-Huzhou, running east-west, and Nantong-Suzhou-Jiaxing-Ningbo, running north-south, will be built, the China Daily reports.
