- Shanghai Tiandihui Supply Chain Management, China’s’s largest online road transportation operator, is looking to raise fresh capital to expand into supply chain finance. Shanghai-based Tiandihui has reported soaring growth for its online platform, which matches trucks with cargo, and connects more than 50 cities. In 2016, the platform handled more than CNY64 billion worth of transactions. In the first half of 2017, transaction value had topped CNY50 billion.
- China United Network Communications Group Co, the country’s second-largest mobile carrier by subscribers, has set up two operating centers to deepen cooperation with Alibaba Group Holding and Tencent Holdings. The move signals that Alibaba and Tencent are almost certain to become shareholders of China Unicom, analysts said.
- Chinese brands accounted for nearly half of global smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2017 as they continued to expand aggressively beyond their home market, according to Counterpoint Research. Shipments increased at 3% year-on-year, reaching 365 million units in the quarter, but the growth of key Chinese smartphone brands significantly outpaced the entire industry, leading to a record 48% share of shipments worldwide, a 39 percentage point jump from two years ago.
- Westinghouse’s bankruptcy would have no substantial impact on the ongoing AP1000 nuclear reactor construction in China at projects in Sanman and Haiyang, Gavin Liu, President of Westinghouse Asia said. Westinghouse, which is part of Toshiba, is committed to work closely with contractors to deliver the final commercial operation. China increased its nuclear power capacity last year by another 8 GW, boosting its installed capacity to around 34 GW.
- The China Internet Network Information Center said China had 751 million netizens by the end of June, 19.92 million more than in December. 514 million of them made online purchases, a 10.2% increase compared with the end of last year. By the end of June, 295 million netizens had ordered takeout meals online, 86.78 million more than in December.
- Wang Min, former Party Secretary and Governor of Jilin and Liaoning provinces, was sentenced to life imprisonment for corruption, taking bribes and negligence of duty. He was also deprived of his political rights for life, with all his personal assets confiscated. He had illegally amassed a fortune of CNY146 million.

- Wanda Internet Technology plans to launch its public cloud service in China in the first quarter of next year after it inked a partnership deal with IBM in March. Dalian Wanda Group has plans to become one of the country’s biggest public cloud providers in five years. The company will only serve big enterprises that prefer value over price.
- China’s three state-owned telecommunications companies announced that they will scrap domestic roaming charges from September 1, one month ahead of the original schedule. China Telecom said it would cancel domestic long-distance charges from September 1. The three operators will also cut international long-distance voice tariffs.
- Imax China Holdings, the Hong Kong-listed provider of Imax systems for cinemas in China, posted a 7.1% fall in net profit for the first half to USD16.5 million, amid slowing ticket sales. Revenue fell 6.3% to USD51.6 million.
- Chinese authorities said restrictions on virtual private networks (VPNs) will have no negative impact on law abiding businesses and individuals. The measures only target unregistered businesses and individuals providing VPN services for cross-border use, Zhang Feng, Chief Engineer of the Ministry of Industry and information Technology (MIIT), said.

- Foreign movies and TV shows were abruptly deleted from two of China’s most popular video-sharing websites, Bilibili and AcFun, in what appeared to be part of an intensifying crackdown. Some programs from Hong Kong and Taiwan were also pulled from the sites. Video streaming and sharing sites have become the main channel for Chinese people to watch foreign movies and TV dramas.
- By 2030, Chinese residents may again breathe air as fresh as it was some four decades ago – but only if the country continues switching to cleaner energy sources, according to a new study by scientists from China, France and the United States, published in the journal Science Advances. By 2030, more than 70% of the people in China will be living in cities, compared with less than 60% at present.
- Chen Rugui, former Party Secretary of Zhongshan in Guangdong province, was appointed Acting Mayor of Shenzhen. He will be the 13th Mayor of Shenzhen and the 12th since the city was designated as China’s first special economic zone (SEZ). He will also be the first Shenzhen Mayor in 27 years who was born in Guangdong. Shenzhen’s mayoral office has been vacant for four months, following the transfer of Xu Qin to Hebei province as Governor.
- Wang Min, a former Party Secretary and Governor of Jilin province, and Party Secretary of Liaoning province, pleaded guilty to corruption. The verdict will be announced at a later date.
- About 210,000 people have been disciplined by anti-graft agencies across the country in the first half of this year, an increase of nearly 30% over the same period last year, according to the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI). Of those punished, 38 were provincial level officials.
- Su Shulin, former Governor of Fujian province, has been put under investigation on suspicion of accepting bribes. Wang Yincheng, former President of the People’s Insurance Company of China (PICC); Zhou Chunyu, former Vice Governor of Anhui province; and Cai Xiyou, former General Manager of Sinochem Group were also placed under investigation.
- Huang Yan, Vice Minister of Housing and Urban-rural Development, is suing China’s fugitive tycoon Guo Wengui in New York State’s Supreme Court for USD10 million for defamation, citing allegations of sexual favors and graft, which Guo made against her in a public YouTube video.
- Sunac China Chairman Sun Hongbin has officially been appointed as the new Chairman of the listed arm of LeEco, replacing the group’s founder, Jia Yueting.

- Nearly half of local people surveyed by the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences Institute of Sociology are backing the Shanghai government’s plan to limit the city’s population to under 25 million by 2020. “The number of supporters is beyond our expectations, especially among those interviewed who come from out of town,” said Dr Zhang Huxiang. The Institute collected a total of 2,079 questionnaires for the survey. Those opposed to the policy mainly worry about labor shortages in the service industries.
- Chinese authorities have detained 35 Japanese nationals in Fujian province for involvement in telephone scams targeting elderly residents of Chiba prefecture east of Tokyo. The impostors usually pose as a child or grandchild desperately in need of cash, asking an elderly person to make a bank transfer to a friend or colleague. They make calls from China to evade crackdowns by Japanese authorities.
- Apple is to build a data center in Guizhou province to comply with rigid cybersecurity laws. It has partnered with Guizhou-Cloud Big Data Industry Co (GCBD), a government-backed data center developer and operator, to build the facility as part of the company’s USD1 billion investment program in Guizhou province.
- Chen Min’er was appointed Party Secretary of Chongqing, replacing Sun Zhengcai, who is reported to be under investigation for “discipline violations”. Chen was formerly Vice Governor of Zhejiang Province, and Governor and Party Secretary of Guizhou province, and has close ties with President Xi jinping. Sun Zhigang has been named Party Secretary of Guizhou.
- International technology firms are increasingly interested in setting up back offices in Dalian, drawn by its human resources, low operating costs and local government incentives, according to accounting firm Deloitte. Many international firms such as Pfizer, HP, Genpact and Accenture have set up business process outsourcing units in Dalian in recent years.

- Former Vice Governor of Anhui province Zhou Chunyu has been expelled from the Communist Party and dismissed from public office. The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) said Zhou refused to cooperate in the Party’s investigation, falsified personal information, concealed offshore deposits, abused his power to seek benefits for others, and accepted “a huge amount” in bribes.
- Su Shuli, former Governor of Fujian province, has been expelled from the Communist Party and dismissed from public office for violating the Party’s code of conduct and for corruption. Su is also a former General Manager of Sinopec.
- China’s electronics exports rebounded to an annual growth rate of 12.5% in the first five months, compared with a 3.6% fall a year earlier. The manufacturing of consumer electronics such as smartphones and TVs maintained steady growth while production of integrated circuits surged more than 25%, said the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
